What is MSG ???

MSG also known as monosodium glutamate is the sodium salt of the common amino acid glutamic acid. It acts as food additives and present in most of the Asian food and processed food. We often heard people say that MSG is bad for our body health because it may cause some negative physical reactions to some individuals. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers the addition of MSG to foods to be ‘generally recognized as safe’ if consumed by human and its uses is still highly controversial by scientists.

5 Possible Side Effects of MSG on Kids

  1. MSG may cause Allergyreactions

This is due to difficult digesting of certain food and having an unpleasant physical reaction that response to the chemicals found in MSG. These may include asthma, vomiting, swelling of lips, face or eyes, skin rashes and itching and so on.

  1. MSG may disrupt normal cellular function in brain

Excitotoxins in MSG can cause a brain cell to become very excited and free radicals can be generated to cause cell death. Once the brain cells die, the damage cannot be repaired. Kids develop rapidly, and are especially prone to brain cell damage upon excessive MSG consumption.

  1. MSG may cause Obesity

Some study shows that MGS may lead to obesity due to the disruption of the hormone known as leptin. Leptin helps to regulate food intake and energy balance by inhibiting hunger. When our body contain high amount of leptin, it will result in weight gain and lead to obesity.

  1. MSG may cause Hyperactive

Hyperactive is a neurodevelopmental disorders ( impairments of the growth and development of the brain and/or central nervous system) affecting most the children. Excitotoxins in MSG can interfere normal mental functioning, and research shows eliminating the intake of MSG in hyperactive child diet can help in improving their behaviour.

  1. MSG may influence kids Sleeping Quality

Study shows that the intake of MSG may cause some sleeping disorder such as insomnia and sleep-disorder breathing (SBD). Poor sleep quality can affect kids physical and cognitive health and even their academic performance.

Nevertheless, reduce the intake of MSG can help to prevent these harmful side effect on kids. So, eat healthily is important for kids physical and mental development.
