Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Eat Food With MSG

“You know when you feel thirsty or headache after eating out?”

– People say that’s because of MSG. –

MSG or Monosodium Glutamate is a flavor enhancer commonly added into our food. It makes our food so tasty, but why we should not eat it?

  1. MSG is a processed glutamate

MSG is a sodium salt of glutamate. The glutamic acid is being produced by the fermentation of starch from tapioca or sugar cane. This processed glutamate is different from the natural glutamate found in our body and most foods. Processed glutamate in MSG appears in free form and can be directly absorbed into our blood stream, while natural glutamate is bound to a protein and requires digestion to be absorbed.

  1. MSG is an excitotoxin

Excitotoxins are amino acids which normally act as a excitatory neutrotransmitter in brain. In excess, it may lead to overstimulation of neurons leading to exhaustion and death. MSG leads to excessive glutamate in the brain and cause nerve cells to die from over-stimulation.

  1. MSG is addictive

MSG intensifies the taste buds on our tongue, giving the strong meaty and savoury flavor. And thus, inducing an addictive behavior.

  1. MSG increase risk of illnesses

Since MSG can intensifies the taste buds, it makes food taste better than it really is. This can trick us into eating lower quality food which contains no health benefits. Eating unhealthy foods or snacks can cause major side effects, for instance obesity, heart diseases, diabetes and many more. Excessive glutamate may also cause neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke, migraine and even depression.

  1. MSG may cause weight gain

MSG is very addictive. We tend to crave for more food and eat more than what we need. Not only we have increased our food intake, eating MSG increases serotonin and insulin. Insulin is the main hormone that blocks the fat burning hormones. In the presence of insulin, we will not be able to burn any fat, and eventually gain weight.

MSG can be found in most prepared and packaged foods, or fast foods. Some companies may hide the fact that their ingredients contain MSG by renaming it to modified starch, hydrolysed or autolysed yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein and etc. Seek out for ingredients containing names listed above and avoid it.
