Does Psyllium Husk Cause Severe Gas and Bloating?

Psyllium husk is a type of fiber derived from the seeds of Plantago ovata, used as a bulk-forming laxative. It contains high soluble fiber, absorbing water and forms a thick, viscous compound to treat constipation, or benefits diarrhea, blood sugar, cholesterol, and weight loss.

It is usually found in the form of husk, granules, or powder. We usually consume psyllium husk by mixing well with water or fruit juices. Psyllium husk appears to be well tolerated by most people. Although it does not seem to have many side effects, cramping, gas or bloating may occur by ingesting psyllium.

There are good bacteria residing in our intestines to break down fiber for fuel, and thus producing gas as a byproduct. A high fiber diet can result in an increase in flatulence. If you start taking psyllium husk at a high dose, you may experience stomach discomfort, bloating from the gas production. To avoid severe bloating, you should start psyllium husk in low dosage, measuring half teaspoon the first time and increase the amount by a half teaspoon every few days until you reach the recommended dosage.

It is also very important to take psyllium with a full glass of water. Staying well hydrated throughout the day by drinking at least 8 glasses of water or fluid. Not drinking enough fluid can cause intestinal blockage or obstruction, causing constipation instead of relieving it.

This fiber supplement can be included in our regimen as part of a healthy diet. Always remember to start with a low dosage and gradually increase to the recommended dosage, drink plenty of water throughout the day and exercise to prevent constipation and benefit from reducing cholesterol, blood sugar, and even blood pressure levels. You may also benefit from weight loss by taking psyllium husk the right way.
