Does Junk Food Affect Children’s Learning?

Junk food and fast food has always been the kids’ favorite food choice of all times. Unfortunately, consuming fast food and junk food has been proved to lead to obesity. These foods have high energy due to the high content of fat and sugar, as well as salt. Not only it has high sodium level, but it contains little to no important nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

 

It is so hard to resist fast food and junk food because of taste and convenience. But, we should all be aware that this kind of food will bring negative impact on our health, especially kids since they do not understand the impact.

 

Not only our kids will suffer from obesity and other chronic health problems linked to obesity, such as diabetes, heart disease and even cancers; lacking essential vitamins, minerals, high-quality proteins and healthy fat will lead to unhealthy growth.

 

Moreover, high sugar levels and extremely high unhealthy fat in fast food and junk food will affect cognitive functions. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2011, consuming junk food regularly may deteriorate our memory, as a poor or toxic diet can cause an inflammation in the brain.  Diets that are high in sugar and fat can cause a suppress of the brain peptide activity that helps with learning and memory formation. High sugar fluctuations may result in lack of alertness and lowering the ability to focus or classroom participation.

 

So, does eating junk food regularly affect your children’s learning? Yes. Food intakes loaded with sugars, caffeine, chemicals, and sodium not only impact their academic performance, but also influences their behavior and mood. On the other hand, if your children’s food intake is filled with nutrients. Having breakfast to help absorb nutrients such as carbohydrates from whole grains, fruits and vegetables, high-quality protein, healthy fat from nuts and seeds to improve cognitive functions and hormone regulations, vitamins, minerals, fiber and water; provide energy, healthy growth, and improved cognitive development.
