Chinese New Year is approaching fast and like every festive season, Malaysians tend to celebrate with foods! Besides yee sang and scrumptious dinners, we also overindulge on our favorite CNY snacks, without realizing the calories. Here’s where you can find out about the snacks you’re having for CNY.


1. Pineapple Tarts

A buttery, flaky pineapple tart contains 93 calories, 2.3g of saturated fat, 6.2g of sugar and 58mg of sodium.


2. Love Letters “Kuih Kapit”

If you’re craving for something sweet to nibble on during CNY house visiting, kueh bangkit might be a lower calorie alternative as a piece contains only 15 calories. Compared to other snacks, it is also lower in saturated fat, sugar, and sodium at 0.3g, 0.9g, and 2.6mg respectively.


3. Ear Biscuits

This savory cookie spiced with five-spice powder and pepper has about 160 calories for every 10 pieces you eat.


4. Dried Shrimp Rolls

Another savory snack, every 10 pieces of crispy deep-fried shrimp rolls contain 228 calories.


5. Bak Kwa

Favorite to most people, made from minced pork blended with salt, soy sauce, sugar and honey, one slice of this barbecued pork jerky contains 380 calories, 12g fat, and 40g sugar.


6. Kuih Bahulu

Soft, buttery kuih bahulu, gives 200 calories when you take 4 pieces.


7. Peanut Cookies

Grounded from peanuts, these melt-in-your-mouth cookies contain 100 calories for 2 pieces.


8. Kuih Bangkit (Tapioca Cookies)

Made from tapioca rice flour, coconut cream, and sugar, they instantly melt in your mouth. Good thing they contain lesser calorie, 46 calories for two pieces.


9. Ribbon Cookies

These come in a variety of shapes, but its main ingredient is flour and it’s deep-fried. Sometimes with sesame seeds. For every 5 pieces you take, they contain 200 calories.


10. Honeycomb Cookies

Almost every race in Malaysia will have this snack for the holidays, but these famous deep-fried cookies are 50 calories each.


11. Sachima

Very famous among the Chinese populated areas, this deep-fried flour coated in honey, like a rice Krispie dipped in melted rock sugar. One-piece will cost you 160 calories.


12. Ngaku Chips

Very similar to many potato chips, these are made from arrowheads and are commonly found during Chinese New Year, one small bowl will contain 140 calories.
